Online guide on hard water and water softening

What is hard water? Calcium (Ca) Magnesium (Mg)

The term hardness refers to the quantity of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. These minerals, which come primarily from limestone type rock formations, are found to some degree in almost all natural waters. Calcium and magnesium cause problems for two principal reasons: When the water is warmed, they precipitate out of solution and form a hard, rock-like scale. This scale accelerates corrosion, restricts flow, and reduces heat transfer in water heaters and boilers.
When they combine with soap, they react to form a curd, which interferes with cleaning, dries out skin, and leaves deposits on plumbing and clothes (bathtub ring; ring around the collar).

Hardness is measured in parts per million (or the equivalent mg/L) or in grains per gallon (gpg). Note: if the water analysis is given in ppm as CaCO3 then 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm. There is no established limit for the acceptable level of hardness in water, but it is generally considered to become problematic at around 3 gpg.

Levels of hardness are referred to as follows:
Soft Water: 0 - 1 grains per gallon (gpg)
Slightly Hard Water: 1 - 4 grains per gallon (gpg)
Moderately Hard Water: 4 - 7 grains per gallon (gpg)
Hard Water: 7 - 10 grains per gallon (gpg)
Very Hard Water: Over 10 grains per gallon (gpg)

What is water softening?

The reduction or removal of calcium and magnesium ions, which are the principal cause of hardness in water.

What is a water softener?

A water softener is a water treatment device in which hard water is passed through a bed of filtration media for the purpose of exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions.

Why do I need a water softener?

Water softening prevents hard water soap curd, lime scum in the sink and bathtub. White chalky scale in your pipes, hot water heaters, shower doors, dishes, glassware, and fixtures. Soft water makes a difference! Our home water softeners will make you feel better bathing, improve your water, and allow soaps and detergents to clean better.

How much water does a water softener use?

Truly efficient - Our whole house water softeners are equipped with a digital metered control valve that will electronically measure and display the amount of water you use before it begins it's regeneration cycle. Therefore, eliminating unnecessary regenerations. Water softeners are backwashing systems that automatically remove the trapped hard water minerals within the filter bed and washes them down the drain. This is accomplished with the electronic control valve that is mounted on top of the softener .This valve is controlled by a meter, that calculates the amount of water being used.Once the meter reaches x amount of gallons, It then initiates the backwash cycle that cleans the bed of filtration media and resets it for the next period of filtration.

What type of maintenance does a water softener need?

Just add either potassium or sodium pellets. Pellets are added to the brine tank of the softener. The more often a softener is regenerated, the more often pellets need to be added. Typically, water softener pellets are checked every other month. We include 2 bags of potassium pellets with your order. Click here to learn more about potassium.

Will your water softener packages provide quality drinking water?
Yes, we offer complete Deluxe whole house water softener packages that will soften your hard water, as well as provide chlorine bad tastes, and odor filtration. This is accomplished with our whole house KDF water filtration system. Patented KDF process media are 100 percent recyclable and contain no chemical additives. Hospitals, restaurants, municipal water treatment facilities, and homes rely on KDF process media to safely reduce and filter chlorine bad tastes and odors from their water. KDF process medium are being used to complement or replace activated carbon filters. KDF 55 Process Medium is certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 42 for drinking water. As a bonus the KDF Water Filter system helps keep the resin in the water softener clean, thus extending its useful life. Our whole house KDF filter system will last approximately about 5 years before needing replacement. The actual time depends on the quality of the water itself and the number of gallons that pass through the system.

Why do you offer a reverse osmosis drinking water filter with some of your softener packages?

We offer reverse osmosis systems with the Sierra and Pacific Packages to provide extra added filtration that KDF and carbon cannot achieve. tgi-525 - 5 stage 25gpd under the counter reverse osmosis water filter. Tested and certified by NSF International against ANSI/NSF Standard 58 for the reduction of Barium, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Cyst, Hexavalent Chromium, Lead, Radium 226/228, Selenium, TDS, and Trivalent Chromium This Reverse Osmosis system has also been validated under the Water Quality Association standards and bears the Gold Seal S-300 of Validation, Certified by the State of California Department of Health Services Certificate #99-1396, Transit tested # 1283

Why do you offer a ultraviolet disinfection water system with some of your softener packages?

We offer whole house ultraviolet disinfection systems with the Pacific Package to provide bacteria and water borne virus treatment. The NSF Drinking Water Treatment Unit Program certified UVMax Pro7 to NSF/ANSI 55 UV Class A, enabling the products to bear the NSF mark. The mark indicates to consumers and regulators that the products have been independently tested and certified. Certified State of California Water Treatment Device # 02-1516

How does UV Disinfection work?

As water flows past the UV lamp(s) in a UV disinfection system, microorganisms are exposed to Ultraviolet light energy at a 253.7nm wave length. Ultraviolet light alters the DNA material in cells so that bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms can no longer reproduce. The microorganisms are considered dead, and the risk of disease from them is eliminated. These Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems are designed for residential, commercial & industrial applications. The process of UV Disinfection is accomplished without adding any harmful chemicals to your drinking water and does not distort the water or effect its pH value. UV Disinfection has an effective kill rate of 99.99% of most living microorganisms such as bacteria & viruses.
